The grandfather of the twins Numitor was removed from the throne of Alba Longa by his own brother Amulius, who later also ordered to thrown them into the Tiber in a basket. The basket ran aground and the twins were discovered by a female wolf who took care of them until they were found by the shepherd Faustulus. The lair of the wolf is the legendary Lupercal in the Palatine hill.
