From the Dionysian procession to the Carnival. Archaeological recoveries by the Guardia di Finanza
10/02 - 11/03/2012
Musei Capitolini

The exhibition addresses some of the rites of ancient Rome which have developed into today's Carnival: the Saturnalia, the Bacchanalia and, more generally, the festivals celebrated by the Romans.

Dionysus or Bacchus, the maenads, the satyrs, the Amazons are the focus of this exhibition which, through some 20 archaeological finds of fragments of frescoes, kylix, amphora and, more generally, vases, all dating from the sixth century BC to the first century AD, aims to focus on the stories of ancient culture linked to festivals. This is an exhibition with works recovered through the long and laborious investigation of the Archaeological Heritage Protection Group of the Guardia di Finanza. The exhibition is curated by Major Massimo Rossi, Commandant of the Archaeological Heritage Protection Group of the Guardia di Finanza, with Fabrizio Porcaroli.
