Exhibition of pieces of art and other items purchased by the Rome Municipality for its museums in the last nine years.

Ten years after the last appointment at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni the exhibition entitled "Purchases and Gifts in the Municipal Museums. 1997-2005" is on once more. A total of 130 works, of various types and periods, have been chosen out of the new acquisitions.
The exhibition, promoted by Assessorato alle Politiche Culturali Sovraintendenza ai Beni Culturali del Comune di Roma, concludes a decade of undertaking on the part of the Municipal Administration dedicated to the increment of the collections in the city's various museums.
The objective was achieved above all thanks to a consolidated relationship of trust between public institutions and private collectors that has allowed these last to look to the "museum" as the ideal place in which to keep and protect one's artistic and cultural heritage. A new stimulus then for the spirit of initiative and cooperation between the Administration and collectors that reconciles the public aspect with private passion, making accessible to a wider number of persons the cultural wealth the city is able to offer.

The museums involved are numerous: the Musei Capitolini, where the works acquired will further enrich the oldest public collection of antiquity, the Museo Napoleonico, Museo di Roma in Trastevere, Galleria Comunale d'Arte Moderna, Planetario e Museo Astronomico, Museo della Civiltà Romana, Museo della Matematica, Museo Civico di Zoologia, Museo della Casina delle Civette, Museo Canonica, and Museo del Giuoco e del Giocattolo, the Museo di Roma Palazzo Braschi, present with a considerable number of works.
In this museum, from 20th January to 26th March, contemporarily with the main exhibition, there will also be a new arrangement of the Sala della Fotografia (Hall of Photography) will a selection of sixty albumin based prints taken in Constantinople in the period 1860-70, which come from the Fondo fotografico Silvio Negro, that includes over 6000 items. The Fondo, purchased in 2003, is kept at the Archivio Fotografico Comunale (Municipal photographic archives).

The displayed works, more than 130, range from the statues of antiquity (such as the copy of the head of Hermes of Policletus), to masterpieces such as Guillaume Courtois's David and Goliath, Joshua Reynolds’s Portrait of Miss Catherine Bishop, and Il Comizio (The Political Rally) by Giulio Turcato. A considerable number of series of prints will also be on show (such as Percier Fontaine's views of Roman villas or the nucleus of Vincenzo Fasolo's project), as well as series of pictures (such as Poussin's Seven Sacraments), and of photographs (most notable among them View of Rome by Alfred Nicolas Normand, one of the oldest photographic views of Rome, and the very rich Silvio Negro fund, one of the earliest collections of historic photographs, centred mostly on XIX century Rome). The exhibition also contains various materials for the scientific museums, which include butterfly collections, mathematical instruments and astronomical reconstructions, and a selection from the absolutely vast repertoire of historic toys for the Museo del Giuoco e del Giocattolo currently being established at Villa Ada.
